Softball Academy: What it means
The Missouri Southern State University Softball Academy wil give student athletes the opportunity to develop their hitting, pitching or new this year catching skills in a cost effective manner. Players will receive instruction on the skill of power hitting and bunting. The Hitting instruction will be led by Missouri Southern State University head coach, Bill Gray. Pitchers will be instructed in leg drive, arm speed, wrist snap and total pitch development. Pitching instruction will be led by MSSU coaches David Wright . Catchers will be instructed on framing, blocking and throwing skills. Instruction will be led by members of the MSSU softball team.
Elementary Academy
The Elementary Academy is for all softball players in grades 1-7. The one-hour sessions will break down the basic skills of hitting or pitching. Hitters will learn the importance of stance, balance and swing mechanics. Pitchers will work on generating power and accuracy. CATCHING is in its second year and will emphasize blocking, framing and throw downs.
Secondary Academy
The Secondary Academy is for all softball players in grades 8-12. No exceptions will be made. The one-hour sessions will break down the skill of hitting from stance, balance and swing mechanics at a more competitive level. The high school athlete will be given instruction on the intricacies of the skill of hitting including: hitting to the opposite field, hitting for power versus average, and the understanding of having a strategy before stepping into the batter’s box. Pitching will emphasize the movement of the four primary pitches in the game of fastpitch. Emphasis will also be placed on change of speed. CATCHING is new this year and will emphasize blocking, framing, throw downs and keys to calling a game from behind the plate.
